Colorado Medieval Festival brings back the days of old

By STACY NICK

VICTORY: The first annual Colorado Medieval Festival begins Friday and runs through Sunday (June 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2005) at 2100 SE Frontage Road, (I-25 and exit 268).

Colorado Medieval Festival

The concept of a "festival" dates back as early as 500 BC when it tied religious activity to commerce. The root of the word "fair" is the Latin word "feria," which means holy day.

Want to know more? Forget the library, hit the Colorado Medieval Festival this weekend.

In addition to capturing all the fair fun, organizer Roger Gomez is looking to make the first Colorado Medieval Festival educational as well as entertaining.

Gomez said he is looking to create a "living history venue" featuring storytelling and a museum showcasing medieval tools and weaponry.

"We want to present more (medieval) history and literature than most similar events," said Gomez of the festival, themed Knowledge Through Re-Creation.

But all knowledge and no fun makes medieval a dull affair.

So in addition to all that educational stuff, the festival will also have live music from the long past, combat exhibitions and vendors selling items including costumes, jewelry and games.

Put on by Medieval World, USA, the event will even have its own special ale for those parched after all that fun.

Fort Collins Brewery is brewing a special "medieval brew" that will be available only at the festival. Custom minted "Coins of the Realm" also will be sold at the festival and can be used to make purchases at various vendors.

Entries from the Colorado Medieval Festival Art Contest will also be showcased and winners will be announced at noon Sunday. Although only in its first year the contest received entries from across the United States, Gomez noted.

There are two other similar festivals - Larkspur's eight-week Colorado Renaissance Festival and Grand Junction's Grand Valley Renaissance Faire. But Gomez said it's time for Northern Colorado to put its hat in the ring.
